About Nandolo Net
Duration: May 2009 to August 2009
Location: Zomba, Malawi (SE Africa)

I have been told several things about the word “Nandolo.” Some say it is a chickpea; others say it is a lentil; and still others say it is a pigeon pea (either way it is a type of legume). It also happens to be the name of the neighborhood where we lived for 10 months. The university owns a large section of the neighborhood and has started to develop more housing for the student population. One plot of land being developed was cleared of its bamboo. So, I collected the bamboo and built a structure in one of our vacant rooms.

The ubiquitous use of “jumbos” (plastic bags) provided me with the material to hold the structure together. During walks I would collect the “jumbos.” Once home, Leslie and I would wash them and incorporate them into my pieces. The “net” structure is loosely based on a hybrid of fish net and small mammal traps.
