About the Series Watching You | Watching Me
Duration: November 2008 to August 2009
Location: Zomba, Malawi (SE Africa)

I wanted to devise a way of documenting the daily flow of pedestrian traffic in Zomba without distracting (more than I already did) the natural rhythm of life. Some of the joy and frustration of living in Malawi came from walking.

I have been interested in low–tech and concealed modes of recording (pinhole, plastic cameras) for years. For this series I created several boxes from a variety of materials; some of the camera boxes were mounted on the back of my bicycle, others were incorporated into seating devices. One variation became part of our shopping bags. The short clips are merely another way to observe some of the idiosyncrasies of the rural/urban character of Zomba.
